The Man Who Leaps with Maasai

Dear Community,

Habari gani (What’s the news?)

During my return to Africa, I quite literally jumped on every opportunity to train my Ancestral Intelligence.

Maasai warriors, also known as "morani," are young male members of the Maasai community, known for their bravery, courage, and protective role.

They are traditionally responsible for safeguarding the cattle and community, and they do so with long spears and buffalo skin shields.

Maasai warriors also herd cattle and protect their own tribe from external threats.

I found these brothers as I was walking through Shela on the island of Lamu, and I quickly learned they are some of the best salesmen on the planet.

At this Maasai Market, I made a purchase from each of their tables, as the money earned is an investment in the entire tribe.

A Maasai man will sell you the clothes off his back to provide for his family.

Before leaving, I inquired about their jumping, as I’d only seen them in places like Nat Geo.

They immediately welcomed me in, and neighbors from surrounding shops took the street to enjoy the show.

The Adumu is more than a dance, it’s a ceremonial rite of passage and symbol of culture and heritage.

Afterwards, the spectators told me “You look like Maasai.”

What an honor!

I’ll be sharing some items I brought back in our online store at BVP Coffee Co.
