This book is dedicated to my grandfather, who continues to inspire my creative storytelling. I thank God for him. - Garry Johnson III

Introduction

Cast Your Bread Upon Water

“I think what you’re trying to ask is...

Why am I so insistent upon giving out to them that Black-ness... that Black Power... pushing them to identify with Black Culture...

I have no choice over it in the first place.

To me, we are the most Beautiful Creatures in the whole world;

Black People.

And I mean that in every sense, outside and inside. And to me, we have a culture that is surpassed by any other civilization, but we don’t know anything about it…

My job is to somehow make them curious enough, or persuade them, by hook or crook, to get more aware of themselves and what they are into and what is already there, and just to bring it out. This is what compels me to compel them.

And I will do it by any means necessary.”

Chapter 1

Origin of The Vision

I n the heart of Africa, under a sky pregnant with stars, there was a moment that seemed to pause time itself—where the future whispered to the past and destiny was sculpted from the dreams of a young man named Sango. This is his origin, a tale woven from the threads of hope, vision, and an unyielding connection to the cosmos, inspired by the soul stirring lyrics of "Zoom" by the Commodores.

Sango stood atop the ancient hill that overlooked his village, bathed in the ethereal glow of the moonlight. The night was serene, a stark contrast to the storm of thoughts raging within him. He felt trapped in a world too small, surrounded by boundaries not of his making but imposed upon him by circumstance and history. He yearned for something more, a life beyond the confines of the familiar, beyond the endless cycle of day and night that dictated the rhythm of village life.

As he gazed upwards, the stars seemed to dance, each one a distant world, a story untold. "I may be just a foolish dreamer, but I don't care," he whispered to the night, his words carried away by the gentle breeze. The lyrics of a song yet to be written echoed in his soul, speaking of dreams and a desire to fly away. He imagined himself zooming into the cosmos, exploring the mysteries of the universe, and finding a place where he truly belonged.

With a heart heavy with longing, Sango closed his eyes and allowed his mind to wander, to zoom beyond the mountains and rivers, beyond the earth and sky. In this dreamscape, he was free, unbound by the chains of the mundane. He envisioned a world where his people thrived, not just survived; a world where the richness of their culture and the depth of their spirit were recognized and celebrated. "I'd like to fly away," he thought, not just for himself, but for all those who felt the weight of invisible shackles.

Suddenly, a vision unfolded before Sango's closed eyes: a magnificent tree, its branches stretching towards the heavens, each leaf shimmering with a light that seemed to pulse with life. Beneath the tree stood a gathering of people, their faces aglow with an inner light and in their eyes the reflection of stars. They were the Black Unicorns, beings of power and grace, destined to change the world. Sango knew in that moment that he was one of them, chosen to lead them across time and space.

The vision bestowed upon him a sense of purpose, a mission that transcended the boundaries of his existence. He was to awaken the Black Unicorns, to gather them and guide them on a journey of rediscovery and empowerment. Together, they would reclaim their rightful place amongst the stars, not as dreamers but as pioneers of a new destiny.

As the first light of dawn kissed the horizon, Sango opened his eyes, his heart alight with newfound resolve. The dream had felt more real than anything he had ever known, a divine prophecy that he was determined to fulfill. "Oh zoom, I'd like to fly far away from here," he sang, his voice a blend of hope and determination. It was a song of freedom, of breaking free from the limitations imposed by the world, a declaration of his intent to chart a new course for himself and his people.

Sango descended from the hill, his steps light, almost as if he was already flying. The journey ahead would be fraught with challenges, but he was ready. He carried within him the light of the vision, a beacon that would guide him through the darkest times. He knew that not all would understand or support him; some would leave, seeking the comfort of the known, while others would join, drawn by the promise of a grand adventure.

But Sango was undeterred. For in his heart, he carried the essence of "Zoom," a song that spoke of infinite possibilities and the power of dreams. It was more than just a melody; it was a mantra, a guiding light for all the Black Unicorns who dared to dream of a life beyond the stars.

And so began the saga of Sango, a tale of courage, unity, and the unbreakable bond between a people and their destiny. It was a story that would span generations, a ballad of the Black Unicorns, sung in the language of dreams and written in the light of the stars.

Chapter 2

The Disconnection

The bustling streets of present-day America contrasted sharply with the serene African landscapes of Sango’s origin. Here, the descendants of the Black Unicorns walked in a world that had forgotten their heritage. They were disconnected not just from their roots but from each other, scattered like stars in a sky clouded by the smoke of industry and the mirrors of modernity.

Tré Johnson, the modern-day incarnation of Sango, had risen above these clouds, but he never lost sight of his heritage. Known as "The Ghetto VC," Tré was a successful entrepreneur who had built a chain of cafés that served as more than just places to dine. They were havens for the community, platforms for change, and beacons for the lost and searching. Through these spaces, Tré sought to reconnect the Black Unicorns with their forgotten legacy.

It was a typical Friday evening at one of Tré’s cafés, The North Star, named after the guiding light that led enslaved Africans to freedom. The café was alive with activity; the scent of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the sounds of conversations and the distant strains of soulful music. The walls were adorned with artwork celebrating African heritage, and the shelves were lined with books on history, culture, and entrepreneurship.

As the evening progressed, Tré took to the small stage at the back of the café. His presence commanded attention, not through intimidation, but through an aura of wisdom and quiet strength. He began to speak, his voice calm yet powerful, resonating with the gathered crowd.

“Welcome, everyone,” Tré began, his eyes scanning the room, meeting the gaze of each person. “Tonight, I want to share a story—a story that is ours, yet has been buried beneath the sands of time and the weight of oppression. It’s the story of the Black Unicorns.”

The room fell silent as Tré continued, weaving a narrative that spanned centuries. He spoke of Sango’s vision, the divine connection with coffee (Stardust), and the lineage of the Black Unicorns—a lineage of kings and queens, warriors and sages, whose legacy had been obscured by the mists of time and tyranny.

“We are the Black Unicorns,” Tré declared, his voice filled with conviction. “Our heritage is rich, our history profound, but we have been disconnected from it for far too long. This disconnection has left us struggling under systemic oppression, much like the Israelites in Egypt. But just as Moses led his people to freedom, we too can find our way back to our true selves.”
